Emmanuelle Seigner - Dingue

She's an actress, singer and a former model. As an actress, she's been praised by her roles in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Frantic. Her singing career started in 2006, when she joined forces with the duo Ultra Orange, becomming Ultra Orange and Emmanuelle. They've released one album, self-titled, in 2007. Personally, I loved their album, it's was a raw pop-rock with beautiful melodies and her sexy vocal.
This is her first solo effort, with a style-change, since this album has more pop than rock on it. I liked it, Iggy Pop does a duo with her in La dernière pluie, my favourite with Dingue. But, being honest, I much prefer her work with Ultra Orange.

The group is essentially a songwriting duo, made up of singer Kelli Scarr, who appears on the Roots single 'Birthday Girl', as well as on several tracks on Moby's latest record, and producer Dan Chen, who co-writes with Nicole Atkins, Natalie Walker, and Ivana XL, to name a few.

A perfect combination of Kelli's angelical voice with a indie-folk-electronic instrumental that works wonderfully with her voice.

Baths - Cerulean

Cerulean is the auspicious debut of L.A.'s Baths. Evolving out of Will Wiesenfeld's varied [Post-Foetus] project, and inspired by the energy of the city's burgeoning beat scene (Daedelus introduced Anticon to Baths), the record represents a clear departure from both – an often warm, acoustic-fueled electronic music that hews closer to the work of contemporaries like Toro Y Moi. By combining songwriting with self-sampling, raw musicianship with synthesized textures, and field recordings with propulsive beats, Baths has created a seething sound-cloud packed with bright moments and prone to unexpected turns.

What a sweet surprise this album is. I've had no idea what it was about, just played. And I fell in love with it in the first beat. A electronic pop with some chillwave on it, its the most delicious (if you can use that adjective to describe an album) album to hear of the year. Its sweet, happy, romantic, dense, lovely. Baths vocal (all the voices that you hear belongs to him) sometimes high-pitched, sometimes sweet, sometimes tense are amazing, as is all the lyrics in the album. And the samples are perfectly put in the songs.
Really, I haven't enjoyed an album that much since The National's High Violet in May. Which I will post, someday.
Ah, I have no idea why, the "version" that I uploaded has two more songs that the "official" release. Well, I don't think you're gonna complain for having two more amazing songs... So, enjoy!

Lunic - Lovethief

Lunic is the music of American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and poet Kaitee Page. Born and raised in Albany, NY, Page traveled the world before starting Lunic in London, UK in early 2008. A classically trained violist and a self-taught pianist, songwriting was a natural progression for Page, whose music reflects the sounds of each city in which she has lived: Nashville, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York City, & London. In particular the music of the English, Alt/Rock band Muse inspired her to transform poetry into song. Page also cites her other main influences as Placebo, Joy Division, IAMX, Paramore and Metric.

Lovethief is Lunic's debut, released last year. Although being her first album, it shows a mature sound, with inteligent and beautiful lyrics, a very good instrumental and her cute rock voice. You can buy it here.

Gotan Project - Tango 3.0

Tango Project is an album released in 1982, by a assemble of American musicians that came together to release a tango album. This album ressuscited the tango, popularizing it again in the whole world. Their rendition of Carlos Gardel's Por Una Cabeza was very successful, being used in a lot of movies, but is instantly recognized by its use in the emblematic dance-scene of Scent of a Woman, in which a blind Al Pacino dances gracefully with Gabrielle Anwar.
Phillip Cohen Solal, a French, Eduardo Makaroff, an Argentine, and Christopher H. Müller, a Swiss, decided to pay a tribute to this famous project that had brought tango to mainstream again and made a play with the word Tango. They then became Gotan Project. Mixing electronic music (such as beats and samples) with the classic tango, they do the called tango nuevo.
This is their fourth album, and they're still amazing and inventive.

High Places - High Places vs. Mankind

High Places is an indie rock band originating from Brooklyn, NY, recently relocated to Los Angeles, CA. The band is a duo comprising multi-instrumentalist Rob Barber and vocalist Mary Pearson. [...] Since its inception, High Places has created a signature sound out of using bass-heavy, yet crisp beats, lilting vocal melodies, syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of household objects. The duo has an “exquisite corpse” style of songwriting where they exchange ideas back and forth, challenging one another’s expectations. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all the while managing to be concise. Overall, the compositions are settled and assured. High Places gravitates toward the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.

Do I need to say anything more? Their sound is GREAT! A criative mix of electronic with organic sounds, with wild beats all over it and the percussion beating the whole album, her voice is smooth and ethereal and somehow fits perfectly well in their sound. Listen to it!

Owen Pallett - Heartland

Owen Pallett, once known as Final Fantasy, is a Canadian violinist and singer-songwriter. He also does a lot of string arrangements to bands, had worked with Arcade Fire and Grizzly Bear.
This is his third album, the first under his own name.
According to him:

The songs on Heartland form a narrative concerning a "young, ultra-violent farmer" named Lewis, commanded by an all-powerful narrator—named Owen. It is set in the fictional world of Spectrum. According to Pallett, the songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis speaking to his creator. Pallett commented that the idea behind Heartland is "preposterous. I wanted to have this contained narrative that has the breadth of a Paul Auster short story." The lyrics raise all sorts of theological questions about believers’ relationship with a deity and the nature of fate, but the construct is just a blank canvas. Pallett said, "Really, it's just all about me. All records are about their singer. I was trying to play with that."

This is the newest release by Richard Ashcroft, the famous singer-songwriter who was Verve's vocalist and had a very successful solo career. To you see how amazing this guy is, since 1997 he has put FIVE consecutives albums in the UK Top 3 album charts. Rob Zombie - Past Present & Future

Another of my personal favourites. Past Present & Future, released in 2003, is a retrospective collection of some of the best works from Rob Zombie, both in his solo career and his work with White Zombie, as well as two unreleased tracks, which are: Two-Lane Blacktop (one of my favourites songs in this album) and Girl on Fire. Some of the songs features special participations from other artists too, like Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper. Enjoy!

Sam Amidon - I See The Sign

Sam Amidon's idea of recomposition-- of excavating Appalachian folksongs; rearranging, repurposing, and creating a dissociation that feels uniquely contemporary-- isn't exactly unprecedented. [...] That's part of what folk music is, and does. What separates Amidon from the scrum of revivalists and archivists is how modern these renditions are. I See the Sign, Amidon's third folk LP, doesn't contain any original tracks, but his interpretations are so singular; [...] Amidon grew up singing folk music in Brattleboro, Vermont; his parents were members of the Word of Mouth chorus, a community choir which performed sacred harp hymns in the 1970s. Culturally, folk music is inextricably linked to the south (and Appalachia in particular), but rural Vermont has birthed its fair share of traditional strummers (pick up Margaret MacArthur's Folksongs of Vermont for an impeccable primer). Amidon inhabits these songs comfortably, with an ease that belies a childhood spent with a fiddle in one hand and a banjo in the other.

architect is a hybrid of minimalistic drum'n'bass and smooth ambient soundscapes explored by the electronic mastermind daniel meyer.
like an architect who built up his constructions in different layers and channels, also daniel is working with this method by using only sampling tools. he's constructing abstract sonic buildings which seem to be peculiar transparent - like concrete frames without any surfaces in a pleasant familiarity. the cold polyrhythmic drumcodes are bet into a melted ambience of safety and grace. it's the warm timbre of this ambient drum'n bass recording which creates its own unique sonic profile.

Die Antwoord - $O$

Die Antwoord is one the weirdest bands that I like. Most of the time I really don't like rap, but those guys do something different (which I'm not sure of what it is) that is trully amazing!
In their Enter the Ninja video, Ninja describes them as a mix of a lot of cultures (as is South Africa, from where they came) and people, such as whites, blacks, afrikaans, all "fucked into one person". Their sound incorporates a lot of the zef culture, a "South African slang term that decribes a unique South African style which is modern and trashy and also includes out-of-date, discarded cultural and style elements."¹. The trio is Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek.

Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know

Well... this one is SPECIAL. One of my personal favourites Heavy Metal albums of EVERY collection that I have here. And I'm FANATIC for Judas Priest. The Devil You Know is the ONLY Studio release from the project Heaven & Hell, which is formed by an earlier Sabbath's line up, also known as the EPIC "Dio-Era". Yes kids, Ronnie James Dio is here for your joy and happiness (not as a ghost)! I think that explains what makes this album so special, huh :D

The Copenhagen based Danish producer and multi instrumentalist started out with a number of yet classic single productions. [...] To expand his horizon and show the world another side of his musical personality he worked on his debut album ‘The Last Resort’ (2006). [...] And now, in 2010, there’s ‘Into The Great Wide Yonder’, Trentemøller’s second artist album. The follow up of ‘The Last Resort’ show an artist that’s willing to take risks, find inspiration in new places and move beyond the sound of his previous album. Trentemøller: ‘Of course I didn’t want to make the same record twice. That would have been boring.’ Instead he just started to collect new ideas, without thinking too much about the direction the music would take him: ‘The only thing I knew was that I’d want the music to be more organic, warm and not typical electronic sounding‘.

Even if you're not much into electronic music, you should listen to this one. It's so charming, well done, such a great atmosphere the whole album!

El Perro del Mar is the alias of Sarah Assbring, a Swedish girl who crafts sweet songs about love, desilusions, break-ups, missing the loved one, in a delicate and gentle way. The album isn't sad, it's melancholic and beautiful, since she's a very skilled songwriter and sings in calm and tender way, that suits perfectly with the album's mood. I also love the title, "love is not pop", it's not a question, there's no doubt on it, it's a statement: love is not easy, love is not to everyone, not everyone can or will enjoy it.
I really like this album a lot, one of the best musical surprises that I had last year. I've put a "bonus song", a remix of Change of Heart made by Rakamonie, a.k.a. Robyn.

The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton (2010) is Clogs’ highly anticipated fifth album and most recent release, following their critically acclaimed, Lantern (2006). The Creatures is their first album of songs after four primarily instrumental releases; a song-cycle composed by Padma Newsome for the group with extensive vocal work from Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond. Other guests include Sufjan Stevens, Aaron Dessner and Matt Berninger of The National and the Osso String Quartet.

 Do I need to say anything else? Just look at the people who worked in the album and who are the band. Amazing sound, mixing classical influence and virtuosi (without being boring) in catchy melodies with astonishing vocal perfomances that hypnotizes you and makes you drift away. Sharon's voice is one of the most beautiful things ever and if you don't believe me, go to the band's MySpace and see for yourself (and if you also don't know My Brightest Diamond, man, you have no idea what you're missing). One of my favourite albums of this year!

Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid

Janelle Monáe is an American singer, songwriter and dancer. An amazing perfomer, she did one of the greatest albums of the year (in my opinion): creative, beautiful, with a very strong history on it, as explains Wikipedia:

In a November 2009 interview, Monáe revealed the title and concept behind her album, The ArchAndroid. The album was released on 18 May 2010. The second and third suites of Metropolis are combined into this full-length release, in which Monáe's alter-ego, Cindi Mayweather—also the protagonist of Metropolis: The Chase Suite— becomes a messiah-esque figure to the android community of Metropolis. [...] The Metropolis concept series draws inspiration from a wide range of musical, cinematic and other sources, ranging from Alfred Hitchcock to Debussy to Philip K. Dick. However, the series puts Fritz Lang's 1927 silent film Metropolis, which Monáe referred to as "the godfather of science-fiction movies," in special regard. Aside from sharing a name, they also share visual styles (the cover for The ArchAndroid is inspired by the iconic poster for Metropolis), conceptual themes and political goals, using expressionistic future scenarios to examine and explode contemporary ideas of prejudice and class.

Give it a try, it really deserve, and I'm pretty sure that you also will be enchanted by this cute young girl who has a powerful voice and dances really well haha!

Robyn - Body Talk PT. 1

Robyn is a Swedish pop-singer, who rose to fame after her successful 2005 release Robyn, which spawned some hits like Handle Me, With Every Heartbeat, Konichiwa Bitches and Cobrastyle.
After five years without releasing a single new song, she came back with might and main, and released the first album of three that she intends to put off this year. The second part has already a release date of September 6.
She's one of the few pop artists that I trully admire and follow the career. You can buy it here.

Julian Lynch - Mare

Lynch once worked for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, and now studies ethnomusicology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and you can hear those diverse influences at work on Mare: The music is recorded on humble equipment, is rough around the edges, and pulls liberally from lots of different genres. There are traces of drone, noise, and African percussion, for instance, alongside more traditional pop and rock elements. His instrumentation is unusual and eclectic, incorporating clarinet, watery guitar lines, shuffling maracas, and delicate drum work. But where bedroom pop tends to be somber and even unsettling at times, Lynch’s music is very much at ease with itself. And it sounds very organic. Tracks are experimental in composition but ultimately echo the mood of folk or country— music that feels like it should be played outdoors.
